The effects of climate change are being strongly faced by our Sicilian neighbours.
In Catania a man was found dead under a vehicle after being swept there by great floods in the area; an elderly 67-year-old man also died after his vehicle was engulfed in flood waters and mud while his wife is reported as missing. Flood waters engulfed most of the main roads and squares popular in Catania and many retail outlets were flooded and vehicles swept away by rainwater currents.
Currently, central Catania is without electricity and schools have been requested to remain closed. Media reports are stating that Sicily has been hit by a rare Mediterranean hurricane that has been named Medicane. The sea has also warmed by eight degrees Celsius when compared to average temperatures at this time of the year. Authorities are warning people not to leave their homes because the current storms pose life threats.
