Fishermen to receive full compensation for damages during last year’s storm
Almost a year and a half since the devastating storm which hit various areas of the country, the government announced the allocation of one million euro for a financial compensation scheme to fishermen who suffered damages in their boats. Minister Anton Refalo stated that in this way the government will forge out all expenses made for maintenance.
Fishermen whose boats suffered damages in thestorm of the 24 February last year will be given the full expenses they made to repair the boats. The Agricultural and Fisheries Ministry therefore launched a one-million euro scheme from national funds. Minister Anton Refalo said the scheme shows that the government appreciates the work of fishermen.
The Aquaculture Department’s director general, Bjorn Callus, said that all professional fishermen who have vessels registered MFA or MFB may apply for the funds. Asked about the number of fishermen who suffered damages in the strong northeasterly storm last year, Mr Callus said that there are 800, but not all of them were damaged.
He added that fishermen will receive the application for the scheme at home, while it can also be found on internet and social media. Applications will be received between the 20th July and 7th August.
