Five passengers die in helicopter crash – pilot manages to survive

Five people died when a helicopter crashed into a New York river. The victims where all passengers on the helicopter.

Three of them died at the hospital while they were being treated for their serious injuries after they were rescued following the accident. The pilot was also rescued and managed to survive the crash. He was taken to the hospital for more observation. It seems that while he was flying over the East River, the pilot requested assistance from LaGuardia airport and was heard saying that the helicopter had sustained damage to its engine.

The helicopter, which belongs to the company Liberty Helicopters, had been leased for a private photo shoot. It is considered one of a fleet of 10 state-of-the-art helicopters belonging to this company which are used for panoramic flights over the city of New York, and which have been used for more than 30 years.

This is the third helicopter crash incurred for this company in the last 11 years. The last accident took place in August 2009 in which nine people died after a crash between a helicopter and a small private plane over the Hudson river.
