Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak passes away

Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who was removed from power in an army coup nine years ago, died at the age of 91.

Mubarak served 30 years as President of Egypt. His removal followed that of various other leaders during the Arab Spring revolts in Arab countries.

During the Egyptian revolution, Hosni Mubarak – a one-time power broker in Middle East politics – was deposed following massive demonstrations in the country. He was even accused of complicity in the killing of some 900 demonstrators during the revolution.

He was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison, however the sentence was dropped and Mubarak was released three year ago.

His death was confirmed by the Egyptian national station. He died in a military hospital where he underwent surgery in recent weeks.
