Former President of Catalonia arrested

The former President of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont has been arrested in Sardenia.

He was detained by the Police as soon as he arrived at the Alghero airport after Spanish authorities had issued a European arrest warrant for him. He was wanted on charges of rebellion.

The former President was in Alghero to attend talks with the President of the region Christian Solinas and the President of the regional council of Alghero, Michele Pais. Alghero is a unique Italian city where Catalan is spoken.

Puigdemont was taken to a prison in Sassari.

According to reports in the Spanish media, Puigdemont was expected to be arraigned in court this morning at around 9am, where it will be decided whether he should be released or be extradited to Spain.
