Former prison director elected President of Guatemala

The Electoral Tribunal in Guatemala has declared that the former prison director, Alejandro Giammattei, has been elected as President of the country. With 95% of the votes counted,  Giammattei who is conservative has obtained 59% of the votes while his rival from the centre-left, Sandra Torres obtained 41%.

Mrs Torres was contesting the post for the third time while this election was the fourth attempt by Giammattei. The lack of security in the country, unemployment, the high cost of living and corruption are the main issues which are worrying the people of Guatemala.
