France to recall ambassadors for consultation following row over nuclear submarines

France is recalling its ambassadors to the United States and Australia for consultation in protest against the security agreement, also involving the United Kingdom. French foreign minister said that the decision is justified due to the seriousness of the situation.

The Aukus alliance will provide Australia with the technology to build nulcear submarines – a move that angered France because it will be relinquishing a multi-billion dollar agreement with Australia.

The U.S.-U.K.-Australia agreement is considered as a measure to counter Chinese influence in the South China Sea. The agreement was announced last Wednesday by U.S. President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

France was informed about the alliance only hours before the agreement was publicly announced.
