France: Two persons died, others injured in bridge collapse

In France, a truck driver and a 15-year old girl died and many other persons were injured after a bridge leading to a small town collapsed. The tragic accident occurred in a tourist area in the southeast of France.

The bridge, leading to the town of Mirepoix-sur-Tarn, collapsed at 8.00am on Monday.

The girl’s mother was rescued by persons who were on site at the time of the accident. Toulouse prosecutor said that three vehicles ended up in the river when the bridge collapsed, while a number of persons are still missing.

It is not yet clear what led to the bridge collapse. The 155 metres long bridge was refurbished in 2003 by the Haute-Garonne council.
