French doctor charged with poisoning 17 patients

A criminal investigation is underway in France against a doctor in connection with the poisoning of at least 17 people.

The anaesthetist, Frédéric Péchier, was already under investigation for seven separate cases with the number of fatalities which he is allegedly connected to amounting to 9.

Prosecutors are alleging that he used to tamper with the dose of anaesthesia administered by his colleagues to the patients during their operation to create emergencies and boast to colleagues about the way he had treated the case.

He has denied the allegations and is facing a life sentence if found guilty.
