A girl has died in Norway after getting infected with rabies from a dog which bit her when she had been on holiday in the Philippines.
24-year-old Brigitte Kallestad picked up a puppy which she found abandond in the street, and took it to her hotel. At some stage the dog bit her.
Kallestad became ill shortly after returning to Norway, and died in hospital on Monday. This was the first death from rabies in Norway in over 200 years.
Kallestad’s family are appealing to the Norwegian authorities to make it compulsory for travellers to the Philippines to be inoculated against rabies.
Thousands of persons die from rabies every year in Asiatic and African countries.
