Government to focus on equal pay for same work and for sustainable development – Minister Abela
The contribution of the social partners and civil society will be a primary consideration in Government’s decisions. This was stated by Dr Carmelo Abela, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, during the opening of the joint meeting of MEUSAC and MCESD Core Group.
Dr Abela, who is responsible for social dialogue, stated that the Government will focus its efforts on two specific matters: equal pay for the same work and sustainable development in each sector.
“The Government is committed for various reasons as this is part of the electoral manifesto of June 2017 which was and still is one of the major points that Prime Minister Robert Abela referred to recently – that we work more on the concept not only for a discussion but for its implementation”.
Minister Abela told the MEUSAC-MCESD Core Group that the fact that social dialogue falls directly under the Prime Minister’s Office shows the Government’s commitment to give further importance to the process, which he said is important for good governance.
The meeting between Meusac and the Council for Social and Economic Development core group discussed various issues, including Brexit and the European semester for economic and fiscal policy coordination of the EU member states.
Minister Abela added that the Government considers the European semester as an important exercise in the context of Malta’s obligations as a member state and therefore it is important to dialogue and discuss the strategy for economic stability and growth.
While emphasizing the importance the Government attaches to constituted bodies and civil society, the minister pledged to consider the various synergies between the different parties to attain the best decisions in the environmental, economic and social sectors.
