Government’s social expenditure increased by nearly €80 million in 2020

The Government’s expenditure on social benefits last year increased by nearly 80 million euro, reaching 1,077 million euro.

The biggest Government expenditure was for contributory benefits, which cost the Treasury over 878 million euro. 14.5 million euro of this amount covered social benefits disbursed because of Covid-19. Most of the payments of contributory benefits go for pensions.

Last year’s expenditure on non-contributory benefits like children’s allowance, allowance for fostering, disability and single parents, as well as assistance for the unemployed, was close to 200 million euro.
