Billionaire Francois Henri Pinault, owner of the French luxury group Kering which oversees fashion brands Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent amongst others, has pledged €100 million to help rebuild the Notre Dame Cathedral after a substantial part of it was destroyed by massive fires.
During an onsite visit, French President Emmanuel MACRON appeared emotional and said that the worst had been avoided and that his thoughts were with Catholics as they commemorate Holy Week, and with Parisian for their huge loss.
Macron vowed that the cathedral would be rebuilt, and that this would be a major project in the coming years.
The exterior structure of the building has been preserved, including the iconic twin bell towers, but the highest bell tower and the roof have been destroyed. After 9 hours the fire managed to be controlled, but it will take days for it to be completely extinguished.
It remains unclear what caused the fire, but the case is being treated as an accident. It is thought that the fire is connected with ongoing restoration works, as the fire started in an area which has scaffolding around it.
The cathedral of Notre Dame has an 850 year history, described by German Chancellor Angela Merkel as a symbol of French and European culture.
