Armed forces had to be called in to assist this morning after trouble broke out at the Safi detention centre.
It appears that the immigrants started protesting shortly before 10.30am, and the situation quickly escalated.
A substantial number of Police officers from various sectors were called to the scene, together with the Armed Forces.
A crew from the Civil Protection Department and ambulances from Mater Dei were also called in when the immigrants lit a fire.
Some detention officers had to be given assistance because of the smoke.
TVM crew are on site and are privy to goings on.
Immigrants are writing messages such as “Freedom”, “Where is humanity?” and “4 months in detention. Why? Free us.”
At 12.45 smoke could be seen rising from a premises which houses 200 immigrants. TVM is informed that a fire broke out with immigrants having to go outside in the yard.
