The 28 Maltese athletes who participated in the Special Olympics were given a huge welcome upon their arrival from Abu Dhabi were they won 40 medals – twelve of them gold in nine sport disciplines. The athletes expressed with TVM their gratitude for the experience and the continuous support they received from the Maltese and Gozitan people.
A feeling of great excitement prevailed at the Malta International Airport as relatives and supporters gathered to give a deserved welcome to the Special Olympics team which, between them, won 40 medals; twelve gold, 13 silver and 15 bronze. They were met at the airport, among others, by the Special Olympics Malta President, Michelle Muscat. The athletes with intellectual disability participated in nine sport disciplines and once again made Malta proud following months of professional training by their instructors.
Special Olympics director, Anna Calleja, said she is proud that the training given to the Maltese athletes lead to results which continued to encourage the athletes to believe in themselves. “Great work, a great team; we were successful. We do not compete to participate, we compete to win”.
Warren Schembri, who achieved great success in table tennis, delivered this message to the people: “I thank you for the huge welcome you gave us today. Let us continue to support the Special Olympics”.
