“I have been swimming here since childhood – the situation is continuously aggravated”
While embellishment and refurbishing works were carried out in many bays around Malta, the Dellimara bays did not benefit the same treatment, and during certain days they are not even accessible to vehicles.
A man who has been swimming since childhood at the picturesque Kalanka bay at
the far end of Dellimara, expressed his disappointment with TVM on the state of abandonment of the bay, which seems to aggravate each year.
The first obstacle is getting near the bay where works are ongoing in Triq Xrobb l-Għaġin with the consequence that access is difficult due to the road’s state and machinery, or even when it is completely closed. Despite that works on the road have started a long time ago and were suspended for various years, the road has not been asphalted so far and has deep and dangerous holes in parts of the road.
When one arrives at the bay, the parking lot is worse than the road, where apart from deep canals, construction machinery or rusted carriages are left there, as the photo sent by a reader shows.
Stairs leading to the bay have deteriorated and, although a brick wall was built, no one seem to tend to the grass which blocked the stairs way. One also notices the lack of waste bins and only an iron structures, which is intended to hold the bins, is in place.
This bay, similar to other ones in Dellimara, is popular among many families and is considered as a swimming bay. During recent days, ladders were installed and buoys placed at sea to indicate it is a swimming zone.
