“I was terrified I would be trampled to death” – Police officer testifies on riots at US Capitol
In the US, the inquiry has started by the Congressional committee about the attack on the Capitol building on 6 January by supporters of former President Donald Trump.
During his testimony, Police officer Aquilino Gonell, who was on duty at the Capitol during the riots, said that on that day he was terrified he would be trampled to death by the mob. At least 535 people who took part in the riots which left 5 dead, including a Police officer, were arrested.
The committee which is hearing the inquiry is made up of nine members. This committee has the power to call witnesses and is then expected to investigate the circumstances which led to the riots, and the reasons why the authorities were not prepared to address such an attack.
