Catalonia demonstrations: Spanish Government says the situation is under control

The Spanish Internal Affairs Minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, said the situation in Catalonia is under control following last night’s violent protests between demonstrators and anti-riot police following an escalation of tensions after Catalonia separatist leaders were given prison sentences.

The Spanish Minister placed the blame for the violence on the separatists who blocked roads, set fire to vehicles and threw stones at the Police who had to use tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. It is estimated that over half a million people attended the demonstration. A total of 17 persons were arrested and 62 others suffered injuries.
