Identity Malta asks Police to investigate discovery of tampered receipts – employee suspended
Identity Malta has asked the Police to investigate an alleged case of misappropriation of funds at the Passport Unit. This was revealed in a statement by the Parliamentary Secretary for Reforms, Citizenship and Simplification.
When Identity Malta concluded its process of reconciliation, which includes an analysis of the receipts issued by this Unit against bank deposit transactions, it resulted that there was a discrepancy in the figures.
From initial indications it appears that the discrepancy amounts to between €20,000 and €25,000.
Today, Identity Malta found receipts which had been tampered with in the possession of the employee responsible for these transactions. The Parliamentary Secretary is informed that when the employee was asked to explain the situation by Identity Malta’s management, the employee admitted that he had taken the money and offered to give them back, on the condition that the Police would not be involved.
However, there and then Identity Malta asked the Police to carry out the necessary investigations. The employee has been suspended and is being interrogated.
Parliamentary Secretary Julia Farrugia Portelli insisted that no abuse would be tolerated.
