A locality in New Zealand is planning to be free from cats with residents being denied of keeping domestic animals.
Authorities in Omaui want to get rid of cats to save endemic birds amphibious which fall victims of cats and are in danger of extinction.
If the plan is approved, all the cats in Omaui have to be neutered, are chipped and registered, and when they die their owners may not rear other cats.
The plan led to protests by residents, who not only love cats but are also concerned that the absence of cats will lead to an increase in rats.
The authorities decision in the region forms part of a national plan around New Zealand for the protection of endemic flora and fauna.
