Over 80 of Pablo Escobar’s ‘cocaine hippos’ have been sterilised

The Colombian government is sterilizing more than 80 hippos that belonged to drug baron Pablo Escobar. So far about 24 of them have been chemically sterilised.

Although Escobar was killed in 1993, his hippos, continued to thrive until they became the largest hippo population outside Africa.

The Cocaine hippos, as they were nicknamed, continued to spread in the countryside around Escobar’s farm; Hacienda Napoles. As a consequence, they have become an invasive species that is adversely affecting local wildlife.
