PD proposes autonomous government for Gozo

The Partit Demokratiku has presented its vision for Gozo saying the island is placed on three pillars, that is, governance, the social aspect and connectivity.

Dr Godfrey Farrugia said the PD has prepared a strategy that the governance of Gozo should be autonomous and managed as a region although there will still be a Minister for Gozo. He said the strategy envisages the population of Gozo does not continue to decrease while it retains its environmental characteristics. The strategy includes Comino becoming a National Park.

He said there should be incentives, including tax relief, for those Maltese families that opt to live in Gozo and send their children to schools there. He explained the need for the provision of employment opportunities and Heath Services providing specialised care under statal management.

In the sphere of connectivity, the Partit Demokratiku said there should be a rapid, modern system that not only connects Gozo to Ċirkewwa but also to St Paul’s Bay, Sliema, Valletta and Kalkara. Dr Farrugia said the PD does not agree with the tunnel being proposed because environmental studies have not been carried out but does consider a tunnel on the seabed because this has environmental advantages and greater security.
