PM Robert Abela insists with EU Council President that Malta cannot continue to further carry the burden of immigration
In a meeting with Charles Michel, the President of the EU Council, Prime Minister Robert Abela insisted that Malta cannot continue to carry the burden of immigration.
He said the reality of immigration is a continuous challenge the country has to face. The PM pointed out that Libya has been a greater help to decrease the burden of immigration and has helped more than the EU.
Dr Abela also mentioned the recent case of the oil tanker ‘Maersk Etienne’ on which the EU had left immigrants stranded on the vessel at sea for 38 days. He said that even if the EU Member States had made a symbolic gesture of taking at least one immigrant this sage would have come to an end in a short period of time.
