An increase of €22 million more on Government social benefits over the first six months of last year

Government expenditure on social benefits during the first six month of this year reached €582.8 million; this is an increase of 5% over the first six months of last year.

National Office for Statistics figures show expenditure on contributory benefits, such as pensions, was almost €22 million more than last year over the same period. There was also an increase in contributory benefits such as benefits to Government employees. This increased by €3 million.

Another increase was that in Children’s Allowance and the Allowance for the Disabled which resulted in €900,000 more covering in-work benefit.
