A court in the Indian capital has concluded that if a woman calls her husband “a fat elephant” it is sufficient grounds for divorce.
The High Court in Delhi has confirmed a sentence handed down by another court in 2012 which granted the man a divorce after it decided that directing such insults towards a spouse falls under “mental cruelty”.
The man, 35, weighs 100 kg. He said that his wife would often humiliate him because he was overweight and could not satisfy her sexually.
The Indian media reported that Judge Vipin Sanghi said that when she called her husband a fat elephant, even though he was obese, she had showed a lack of respect and had affected his self-esteem.
The woman said that her husband’s allegations were vague and not specific however the Court did not accept her arguments.
