Investment of €530,000 in new vehicles and machinery for agricultural department

Departments and Directorates within the Parliamentary Secretary’s Department for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Welfare now have a new fleet of vehicles and agricultural machines following an investment of €530,000.

The fleet includes electrically-powered trucks, vans, tractors, bulldozers and cars and will be used by ten departments and directorates within the Secretariat Department.

Parliamentary Secretary Roderick Galdes said the department had experienced a shortage of machinery and equipment and the 27 vehicles and machines purchased will provide the necessary tools for the employees. As an example he said that equipment for the Government farm at Għammieri had last been purchased during the 1970s. This equipment is now the worse for wear and tear and far off today’s technological requirements.

The Director General for Rural Development Mario Spiteri said there is a variety of new equipment, much of it specialised and providing more safety measures for persons in the driving cabins.

He said the new equipment included machinery to trim trees and cherry pickers, all designed to provide safe and secure features for persons using them.

Dr Spiteri explained the equipment will be used at Buskett, in various parks and some will also be utilised by the fisheries section, among other departments.
