Iran attacks American military bases with missiles

Two air bases in Iran where there are American troops were hit by a number of missiles.

Iranian state broadcasting said that the attack was carried out in retaliation for the murder of General Qasem Soleimani in a drone attack on Baghdad on the orders of US President Donald Trump. The US Defence Department said that two sites were hit, in Irbil  and Al Asad. It is not yet clear whether anyone was killed or injured.

On Twitter,  Iranian Foreign Affairs Minister Javad Zarif later described the attack as an act of self-defence and denied that Iran was seeking to escalate the situation into a war.

President Trump replied and insisted that everything was alright, while adding that it is not yet known whether there were any victims.
