A 67-year-old Irishman is in danger of dying. The elderly man is presently in Intensive Care at Mater Dei Hospital after being hit by a car in Sliema in the early hours of this morning. The accident occurred in Windsor Street at about 1.00 a.m.

The Mercedes Smart car which hit the foreign national was being driven by a 30-year-old man from Mosta. On impact, the Irishman ended up on the windscreen, then slid off and finished up under the pavement. An ambulance was summoned to the scene and transferred the man to hospital, where he was immediately certified to be in a serious condition and in danger of dying.

District Police officers led by Inspector Jonathan Ransley started an investigation at the site of the accident. Duty Magistrate Caroline Farrugia Frendo is conducting an inquiry, and has appointed technical expert Mario Buttigieg, architect Richard Aquilina and Scene of Crime officers to assist.

Meanwhile, following the accident the driver of the car was taken to the Police Station and failed a breathalyser test.
