Italian ambassador and two other persons killed during a humanitarian convoy in Congo
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Italian ambassador and two other persons, including a Policeman, were killed during a humanitarian activity.
The Italian Foreign Ministry said that 43-year old Luca Attanasio and a Carabiniere, aged 30, died in a hospital following an attack on a United Nations convoy in Goma. The two were traveling in the convoy which formed part of the World Food Programme. Reports said that the attack was intended to abduct the ambassador who was shot in the chest.
In a statement, the Maltese Government expressed solidarity with Italy and strongly condemned the brutal killing of the Italian ambassador and the two other persons. While expressing sympathy and support to the Italian people and the victims’ families, the Foreign and European Affairs Ministry appealed for effort to end violence in the region.
