Imprisoned after trying to flee Malta using another person’s passport

A Nigerian man who during the last year twice tried to use a passport belonging to another person to be able to flee Malta was sentenced to a year of imprisonment with Magistrate Joe Mifsud ordering that after serving his sentence he is to be deported back to Nigeria.

He has already served a six month sentence following his arrest in March of last year when he made his first attempt to leave Malta.

The Nigerian, Yousef Karim, who lived at the Ħal Far Open Centre, managed to reach Rome but was detained at Rome airport and sent back to Malta.

He was accused of having made use of another person’s passport, of having given false information to immigration officials and of being a repeat offender. He admitted to the accusations.
