No chance of being allowed in at Lampedusa . . . not even by Christmas

The Italian Deputy Prime Minister who is also Minister for Internal Affairs, Matteo Salvini, is refusing to enable 53 immigrants who have been at sea for two weeks off Lampedusa, to be allowed in. Salvini said the ship they are on stands no chance of being allowed to enter Lampedusa … even by Christmas.

A spokesperson for Sea Watch 3 said the situation on board is deteriorating with the immigrants on board feeling as if they have been imprisoned. Last week Italian Authorities had to enable 10 immigrants to be landed because of their health condition.

For Sea Watch 3, Giorgia Linardi said, ”People were asking whether disembarkation happens on racial basis and what is needed to be disembarked, how bad one person needs to feel. This is really showing the absurdity of the situation.”

According to the directive issued by Salvini, NGO ships are not to be allowed to enter Italian territorial waters because they pose a security risk. It also states that those that disobey risk a fine of €50,000.
