Caught with excess cash when trying to leave Malta

Mahammed Abdullah Ahmed Al-Wahaishi from Yemen but resident in Saudi Arabia, who was caught trying to leave Malta carrying €4,000 in excess cash over the permitted maximum, admitted he had not declared the excess cash to Customs.

He apologised to the Court and the Police. His Defence Lawyer Mario Mifsud said he calculated the amount of money he could carry according to Saudi Arabian law and he did not know the limit imposed in Malta is less.

The Court confiscated the €4,000 and the man was fined €3,400, the 25% equivalent of the money in his possession when he was on his way to Istanbul.
