The personal information of millions of users of Instagram has been aired online on a database. The information was stored in a server unprotected by a password and therefore became accessible to all.
TechCrunch is reporting that the server contained 49 million records, including email addresses and telephone numbers of Instagram users. The report states that the major part of the stored information on the database is that of celebrities and commercial companies, a database run by an Indian marketing company named Chtrbox.
An Instagram spokesperson said an investigation is underway to see whether the information was being collated by a person and whether this infringes the right to privacy. It is not clear whether email and ‘phone details on the database actually originated from Instagram.
Instagram is stating this is a very serious case and is being investigated to establish what actually happened. The database went offline a little while after it appeared and the owning company has not commented on the case.
