Football player Antoine Camilleri, who wears the number seven shirt and plays for Sannat FC, left the football ground handcuffed after he attacked and laid out the Assistant Referee during a soccer match. TVM is informed he will be arraigned in Court tomorrow.
TVM contacted the match Referee, Massimo Axisa, who explained what had happened. Axisa said that in the 90th minute a player was red carded and dismissed for a vicious tackle. The player left the pitch without any problem. Meanwhile, while the injured player was receiving treatment, Camilleri began to offend the Referee and the Assistant Referee for a decision that had been taken ten minutes earlier.
Axisa explained that Camilleri had already been yellow carded and he felt the player’s conduct was not acceptable and he moved to dismiss the player. At that point Camilleri turned on Axisa and tried to manhandle him, tried to snatch papers out of his hand and then tried to punch him but was immediately stopped by other players. However, a short while later when all thought that Camilleri had calmed down he ran up to the Assistant Referee and twice punched him in the face. The official collapsed clutching his face and Camilleri continued to strike him. Axisa continued to explain that when Camilleri went into the underground dressing room he continued to insult and threaten the Referee from the room’s window.
Meanwhile the Gozo Football Association strongly condemned the assault of official Andrea Pavia and said that all the necessary disciplinary steps will be taken according to its statute and that of the Malta Football Association and that such incidents have no place in football played in Gozo or elsewhere.
