The US and Iranian authorities have agreed on the mutual liberation of a prisoner each in an agreement which will see Chinese-American researcher Xiyue Wang, who has been under arrest in Iran for three years, being exchanged for Massoud Soleimani, an Iranian stem cells expert who has been held in a Chicago prison since last year.
Xiyue had been accused of espionage against Iran, while Soleimani was accused of taking biological material from the US to Iran. Both persons had denied the accusations against them.
Xiyue will be reunited with his wife and their son Shaofan who has not seen his father for the last three years. He went to Iran to carry out research for his doctorate thesis but when about to leave the country was charged with being in possession of confidential material he would give to academic institutions in the UK and the US.
