Lightning bolt kills 16 people inside a church

A bolt of lightening has killed at least 16 people and injured another 140 people after it struck a church in Rwanda.

Many of the victims were killed there and then inside the church which is located in the south of Nyaruguru. Two other people died later at the hospital.

Three of the 140 people injured are in critical condition.

The incident happened on Saturday at 12pm during Mass.

Over the last two weeks, around 700 churches in Rwanda have been closed because they are not equipped with lightning rods.
