Mafia boss escapes from Uruguay prison

Italian Mafia boss Rocco Morabito, managed to escape from a Uruguay prison while awaiting to be extradited to Italy.

Morabito, who ran the Calabrian Mafia better known as the Ndrangheta, has been one of the most wanted criminals in Italy since 1994.

He was arrested in 2017 in ‘Uruguay, after 20 years on the run.

Morabito was sentenced to 30 years in prison after being found guilty of drug trafficking and organized crime but he, and three other criminals, managed to escape from prison in Montevideo through a hole.

Before fleeing, the three criminal plundered a farm.

Interior Minister, Matteo Salvini said he is concerned about how the criminal managed to escape from prison. He said that Italy will work closely with Interpol to capture Morabito and return him to prison.
