Eurostat figures on tourism in the European Union show that the tourism industry in Malta in 2018 showed some of the best results among the 28 European Union member countries, and these were far better than the European average.
Whilst tourist bed nights in European countries increased by 2% on average, tourist bed nights in Malta went up by 6.5%. Latvia and Lithuania were the only two countries which showed a better result than Malta.
It emerges from Eurostat figures that 96% of nights spent by tourists in hotels were not Maltese. It therefore results that Malta had the highest rate of nights in the European Union by persons who were not residents of the country. It results from Eurostat figures for 2018 that Malta, with 8.6%, registered the second highest increase after Cyprus in regard to internal tourism.
