Two memoranda of understanding were signed today during a bilateral meeting held at the Ministry between Minister Carmelo Abela on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion and His Excellency Dr. AK Abdul Momeni on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bangladesh. The two Foreign Affairs Ministers met for the first time today while the two countries marked the 40th anniversary of their establishment of diplomatic relations.
The Memorandum of Understanding establishing bilateral consultations between Malta and Bangladesh marks an important event in the history of the two countries’ bilateral relations, because it enhances the development of the existing relations and mutual understanding and provides a framework for further meetings where matters of mutual interest can be discussed. Both Ministers agreed to follow up with the immediate implementation of this agreement through political consultation meetings to be held at the beginning of next year.
In addition, through the Memorandum of Understanding between the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies (MEDAC) and Bangladesh Foreign Service Academy, Malta and Bangladesh are strengthening relations in the important field of diplomacy and Diplomatic Training which is instrumental for the preservation of peace, security and the promotion of understanding, dialogue, and cooperation. Minister Abela said that “this is a new opportunity for diplomats from Malta, those from the Mediterranean region and those from Bangladesh to get to know each other and to better understand the realities and politics of both regions, namely those of the Mediterranean and South Asia “.
In conclusion the Minister remarked that Malta supports trade policy between the European Union and Bangladesh, a country which is becoming more interesting to the Maltese business community, and where work was underway to further improve relations through Trade Malta and the Malta Chamber of Commerce Malta.
