Malta’s seawater has been ranked as the fourth cleanest among EU countries.
This results from statistics issued by Eurostat following water samples taken during 2019.
The figures show that 97.7% of the local beaches where people swim have seawater which is of excellent quality.
This is when the average for member states was 88%.
Lithuania has the cleanest sea water, 100%, followed by Cyprus at 99% and Croatia at 98%.
Poland has the lowest rate at 29% although the waters around its coast are of excellent quality.
Estonia and Finland were ranked at 52% and 64% respectively.
