Malta has lowest tap water consumption in EU

The Maltese consume the least amount of tap water in the European Union. In a statement by the Chief Executive of TAPP Malta Phil Richards explained how every household in Malta and Gozo consumed an average of 1,000 plastic bottles of water per year, or 200 million bottles throughout the country.

According to Mr Richards, the main reason for this was that the Maltese do not like tap water, despite the fact that, in his words this water meets all European Union standards.

He added that this would lead to “less than 20% of these bottles being recycled, while at the price of fuel at today’s levels, new plastic is cheaper than recycled one.” This while explaining that plastic can be recycled between two and three times, leading to more waste in our landfills.
