A 32-year old Maltese national, only identified by Ragusa’s Guardia di Finanza as F.J., is being held under arrest after he was caught with 231 kg of marijuana on a trailer as he was leaving Pozzallo towards Malta.
The Maltese man, who works as a driver with a Maltese transport company, was arrested on the night between Tuesday and Wednesday. He was stopped by Guardia di Finanza officers and by Pozzallo customs officers following his suspicious movements a few moments before he was about to drive his trailer on the catamaran, Jean de La Vallette, from Pozzallo port to Malta.
Two German Shepherd dogs, Aquy and Primo, immediately drew the attention of the officers on the possible presence of drugs in the truck being driven by the Maltese man.
The Italian officers acted by unloading the trailer and during their search among packages, they found 114 packets with marijuana, weighing 231 kg.
The man was taken to a Ragusa prison in order to undergo criminal proceedings against him by Italian authorities.
Meanwhile, the Guardia di Finanza and Customs of Pozzallo said that the seizure followed two other seizures in recent days exactly as two persons were about to leave Pozzallo for Malta on the catamaran. A Maltese woman was found with 52 fake dresses of a renowned firm, while a Pakistani was carrying 48 kg of contraband tobacco.
