Man accused of threatening Fr Dionysius because he could not offer him shelter
Lamin Gassama, 21, from Gambia has been charged with threatening Fr Dionysius Mintoff last night.
Inspector Cuschieri said that the accused went to the Peace Laboratory shortly after 7.00pm and found Fr Dionysius. He asked him for shelter because he has nowhere to live. When Fr Dionysius told him that he did not have any space, the accused began calling him names and threatened that he would come back later and kill him. The Police also charged the man with living like a vagabond.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him. The court, presided over by Magistrate Victor Axiak, issued a protection order in favour of Fr Dionysius Mintoff, while the accused was remanded under arrest after the defence did not ask for bail because the accused is homeless.
The Court also recommended that the accused be given help and appointed psychiatric expert Joe Cassar to assess his psychiatric state.
The sitting was adjourned until Monday 9. November during which the reports requested by the Court need to be presented.
