Updated: Man remanded in custody after being apprehended with 700 grams of cocaine and thousands in cash
A 46-year-old man, a resident of Valletta, has been remanded in custody after being charged in Court with cocaine trafficking.
Josef Sharfid was also charged with having, on 17 September, been in possession of cocaine, carried out money laundering crimes, and being a relapser. The accused denied the charges.
The Police had earlier stated that the man had been apprehended during investigations by Anti-Drug Squad officers, and had been stopped in Victor Denaro Street, Msida.
It was also stated that when the man noticed the Police presence, he tried to flee and discarded a suspicious package. It resulted from an initial analysis that the package contained a number of capsules with a substance suspected as being cocaine, and amounting to about 700 grams.
The man was also found to be carrying some 13,000 euro in cash, and another 14,000 euro were recovered from his residence.
Duty Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit was notified and set up an inquiry.
The man was detained at the Police General Headquarters lock-up in Floriana until his late morning arraignment. Police investigations are ongoing.
