Man falls asleep on a lilo and is swept away by currents to Messina

A man who fell asleep on a lilo found himself a number of kilometres away in the strait of Messina, the channel between Italy and Sicily.

After a search which lasted nine hours, the man from Reggio Calabria was rescued between Saturday and Sunday by members of the Italian Civil Protection Service.

From Scilla, a village in the Calabrian region of southern Italy, the currents swept him towards Messina in Sicily. He was taken back home by Italian coastguards.
