UPDATED: Saviour Gaffarena killed by gunshots in Mqabba, his cousin wounded – four people arrested
A 27-year-old man, Saviour Gafferena, was killed by a firearm shot to his head late on Wednesday night in the area of Ħal Millieri in Qrendi. His cousin 17-year-old Vince Gaffarena, who was with him, was hit by two shots and later drove to Imqabba, with Saviour Gaffarena’s body on the passenger seat. The Police are holding four youths suspected of having been involved in the crime.
During a media conference at Police General Headquarters in Floriana, the Police authorities stated that investigations into the murder of 27-year-old Saviour Gaffarena and the wounding of 17-year-old Vincent Gaffarena are indicating they are drug-linked. Three hours after being informed about the case, the Police arrested two youths aged 19 and 18, who are being considered the main suspects in the case. The Police added that they are also holding a 17-year-old youth and a 21-year-old woman.
The inquiry being conducted by Duty Magistrate Victor Axiaq has established that victim Saviour Gaffarena was hit by a shot to his head, whilst Vincent Gaffarena was hit by shots to his face and shoulder. According to the Police, it is understood the shooting took place in a lane in the area of Ħal Millieri in Qrendi, where cartridges were found and elevated by Court experts. From there, the injured 17-year-old drove to Triq il-Konvoj ta’ Santa Marija in Imqabba, with his cousin’s body on the passenger seat.
The Police and a medical team, who happened to be in the vicinity because of the International Fireworks Festival taking place in Imqabba, went to the scene to render first assistance and found a Renault car with the horn being sounded, at which point the driver emerged and shouted that he had been shot.
Saviour Gaffarena was certified dead at the scene, and the 17-year-old youth was transferred to hospital where he was operated on and is in a stable condition.
A joint investigation by Police officers from the Major Crimes Unit, the Special Intervention Unit, Rapid Intervention Unit and District officers is ongoing.
The motive has still to be established, and the Police are waiting for the youth Vince Gaffarena, presently in hospital, to be in a position to speak with them.
Victim Saviour Gaffarena is known to the Police and had been investigated more than once in the past in connection with various crimes.
