Man remanded in custody after no legal aid lawyer was available to assist
A 37-year-old Nepalese national has been arraigned in court and charged with using a false passport.
The Police explained that the man had been apprehended when he was about to try to travel to Portugal using a false document which, it resulted, he had purchased from Spain for 1,500 euro. The man had been made to leave Malta when his visa had expired, and he had purchased the document in order to return and live here.
In Court, the accused did not have legal assistance, as from information available to TVM, no lawyer from the legal aid office could be found to assist him.
The accused was accordingly automatically registered as pleading not guilty to the charges, and Magistrate Yana Micallef Stafrace ordered that he be remanded in custody.
