Man tries to leave Malta with more than €20,000 in small pouch

On Tuesday, customs officials stopped an Egyptian man at the Malta International Airport after they caught him trying to leave the country with more than €20,000 of undeclared cash.

The officials said that the man was carrying the money in a pouch. Every passenger is obliged by law to declare to customs if they are travelling with more than €10,000 on their person.

After they carried out an extensive search on the passenger and his belongings, the officials returned €10,000 back to him and confiscated the rest.

The police economic crimes unit was informed of the case, and arrested the Egyptian man.
