The independent MP Marlene Farrugia has presented in Parliament a Legal Amendment to decriminalize abortion in Malta.
Malta is one of the few countries in the world and the only EU Member State that legally forbids the termination of a pregnancy under any circumstance.
The Amendment was presented in the Chamber of Representatives at the end of Question Time.
According to the country’s Criminal Code any person seeking or helping to perform an abortion is liable to a term of imprisonment ranging from 18 months to three years of imprisonment. The same penalty applies to a woman performing self-abortion or having complied with measures to bring about an abortion.
Addressing Parliament, Marlene Farrugia said she is proposing the Amendment so that no person or medical professional will suffer discrimination or criminal proceedings in their medical choice, including that for helping others in implementing their choice.
