Marriage proposal ends up scorching protected area of Għajn Tuffieħa

A man who yesterday proposed marriage to his loved one ended up setting fire to a protected area of trees in Għajn Tuffieħa.

Video footage posted on social media shows a number of people running on the wasteland overlooking the Riviera Bay and carrying flares, and with a “Will You Marry Me?” banner stretched out behind them.

Whilst many enthused over the originality of this proposal, others drew attention to the damage caused to this nature site, which could actually have been much worse.

Together with a photograph of scorched earth which she posted on Facebook, environmental activist Camilla Appelgren stated that this was one of three places that ended up burnt.

Appelgren stressed that flares are meant for use at sea rather than on land, adding that with some wind blowing, they could have burnt the tamarisk trees in the area. The activist urged anyone spotting such illegalities to report these to the authorities.
